Horizon Helps Build a Better Future With $10,000 Donation

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA, November 4, 2024 – Horizon Credit Union helped secure the future of local families by awarding $10,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Spokane. To make the donation, Horizon obtained a Member Impact Fund grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. This matching grant program helped Horizon increase their initial contribution by 300%, turning $2,500 into $10,000. The money will be used to fight housing insecurity throughout Spokane County.

Horizon Credit Union has a been a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity of Spokane since 2018, and Horizon employees frequently volunteer to help build homes for families in need.

“At Horizon, we believe in people helping people. That’s exactly what Habitat for Humanity does: they organize people to tangibly help others in their own neighborhood,” said Kathleen Makena, community engagement manager. “Our partnership with Habitat also makes the effects of banking with a credit union like Horizon really clear. When you bank with us, your dollars are put directly to work in the community. Owning a home changes the trajectory of these families’ lives forever. Where you put your money matters.”

Habitat for Humanity will use the funds to empower modest-income families that are ready to maintain an affordable mortgage and willing to invest time into building their own homes. As of September 2024, Habitat families own over 420 homes in Spokane County. Every new build helps a family achieve long-term stability. New builds can also boost neighborhood property values and help revitalize local businesses by driving demand for goods and services.

“Habitat for Humanity has been building affordable homes in Spokane County for 37 years. It’s an honor to be involved with their mission. They’re especially deserving of the Member Impact Fund grant,” said Tami Lawrence, Horizon’s vice president of accounting. “The need for affordable housing is greater than ever, so we’re excited to continue our partnership with Habitat for Humanity and support their efforts in the future.”
