Be Cautious with QR Codes

QR codes are everywhere these days. QR codes (quick-response code) are those little black and white square boxes with a digital pattern. They can be read by an imaging device – like the camera on your smartphone. It’s a versatile tool you can use to open a web page, see the menu at a restaurant, use as a ticket for an event, connect to a wireless network or compose a text or email. You may see them on Horizon materials from our branch screens to postcards and fliers.

However, they can also be used to hide harmful links and steal your information. So you may want to use caution before scanning. How do you know if a QR code is safe?

  • Only scan codes from companies you trust.
  • Watch for fake codes. Does it look like a sticker with a QR code has been added to something? It could be a scammer attempting to trick you into scanning their fake code, in a legitimate location.
  • If you’re not sure, don’t scan.

Our friends at the FTC have some additional tips to help protect you when scanning QR codes. Click here to read their article.

Remember, QR codes are generally safe and convenient, but be cautious. Staying aware can help protect you from scammers!
